How To Make Your Own Match Jar
Stop! Don’t throw your candle into the trash. Let’s clean it for reuse instead. Here at Vellabox, we’re big fans of reusing what we can from our subscription box and recycling what we can’t. The possibilities are endless when it comes to reusing your candle jar. Today, we’ll teach you how to create your own match jar using your monthly candle.
Before we get started, how do you know when your candle has reached the end of its lifespan? Rule of thumb: if you can see the wick at the bottom of your candle, that marks the last burn. If you let your candle burn all the way til the end, you run the risk of the jar overheating and, well, you don’t want to know what happens next… Instead, you can give your candle a second chance!
STEP 1: Clean Your Jar
Now, let’s get into best cleaning practices before repurposing shall we?! There’s 3 methods to choose from to prep your jar for reuse.
- Freezer Method:
- Place your candle jar in the freezer.
- Leave it for a few hours or overnight.
- The cold temperature will cause the wax to shrink and become easier to remove.
- Once the wax is hard, use a knife or spoon to gently pry it out.
- Dispose of the removed wax in the trash, not the sink!
2. Boil Method:
- Boil a pot of water.
- Carefully pour the hot water into the candle jar.
- The remaining wax will melt and float to the top.
- Allow the water to cool and the wax to solidify.
- Remove the hardened wax from the surface of the water.
- Dispose of the wax in the trash.
3. Scrape Out Method:
- Use a knife or spoon to scrape out any remaining wax from the jar.
- Be careful not to damage the jar in the process.
- Once most of the wax is removed, wash the jar with hot water and soap.
- Rinse thoroughly to ensure all wax residue is gone.
Remember to practice safety when handling hot wax and boiling water, and always dispose of wax properly in the trash to prevent plumbing issues.
STEP 2: Add Match Striker
You can purchase match striker paper online. They come in assortment of sizes and shapes to compliment your candle jar vessel.
- Peel off the backing of the match striker paper to expose the adhesive side.
- Carefully apply the sticker to the bottom of the jar, making sure it’s centered and securely attached.
- Press down firmly to ensure good adhesion.
- Allow it to set for a few minutes to ensure it’s securely attached.
